StarCraft, is the chess of our generation. StarCraft requires the dexterity of a pianist, the mind of a chess grandmaster, and the discipline of an Olympic trainee.
— Sean “Day[9]” Plott
That quote is the essence of why I play and enjoy StarCraft. It's a never ending challenge and it is immensely rewarding to practice.

On this page I have gathered some notes about the basics for learning and practicing StarCraft II. It's mostly a list of my personal approach to practicing and learning the game but it might be helpful to you too. It's Terran biased since it's my main race but I also play random so most of this will be generally applicable.

The order of the topics is based on what I believe is a good order to learn, starting with the most fundamental things and then moving on to more sophisticated and complex areas. Crawl, walk, run.

This is a work in progress.

A note to more experienced players

If you spot anything strange, plain wrong or out right stupid in this document, please let me know what and why. Legitimate advice is always appreciated.

 Hotkeys and control groups

My approach is to stick as much as possible to default hotkeys and only make changes where necessary.

The major difference I have is to remap CapsLock to Control on my keyboard. I do this in my OS since it's a very useful thing over all.
  • use hot keys to issue commands
  • learn to create and use control groups
  • learn to use camera locations
  • add to control group
  • deselect from control group
  • control group stealing
  • rapid fire for spell casters

Mental Check List (MCL)

A mental check list is a cycle of steps to continously go through when playing. A good  cycle for SC2 is:
  • build worker
  • spend resources
  • build supply
  • check minimap
  • scout and move
In more detail, in the way Day9 put it:
  • Constantly build workers!
  • Keep your money low!
  • Do not get supplyblocked!
  • Watch the Minimap!
  • Scout (the front)!

When it gets rough

"Remember that if you ever let your ego feed on your achievements and grow bloated and fat, it will be twice as shocking when you run into a new barrier. And your ego will prefer you take breaks, run away, or even if you keep playing, it will make you irrational and blame games on all-ins, cheese, random shit, luck, accidents and your opponent being "so dumb that he didnt react to what I did". You will stop learning from your losses and go on tilt much faster. This negative focus will make Starcraft a very sour experience for you. Work on avoiding it at all costs." - PiG

Terminology

There are a lot of terms and expressions used that seems foreign when you are new to the game. Here are some of the most basic ones.
